Citizen Engagement in Development

Citizen Engagement requires active involvement in the public projects, public policy making and decision making process. Citizen engagement involves citizen in the public decision making process. As an important stakeholder, citizens make the decision making institutions, officials, local representatives, public bodies, transparent, accountable, effective and suggesting innovative solutions to the local challenges.


Ways to engage citizens in the public development programs:

  • -          Collaboration in decision making
  • -          Citizen feedback
  • -          Citizen led monitoring
  • -          Grievances redress mechanisms


     Important Areas for citizen engagement:

* Public Finance Management:

        Helps in the improving public finance management (PFM) through transparency, accountability, and effectiveness of the budget system; necessary for the budget transparency, accountability, effectiveness

        Requires active and vocal roles in the budget process; suggesting how to manage the fiscal resources of the state

 

* Policy Making:

        Accountability in terms of the policy formulation and implementation; in inclusive and democratic governance process

 

* Auditing process:

        Citizens in performance audit process – monitoring and evaluation of the public bodies, sectors; with follow ups

 

* Improving Public Service Delivery

        Citizens can actively involve themselves in improving the public service delivery; demanding the newer technologies, improvement in the service delivery mechanisms showing dissatisfaction in the process; citizens can share their expertise and propose new initiatives
