WHAT ARE THE STATUS OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IN NEPAL?

*****************************************************************

Human development is the way to enhance the people's freedom, and opportunities while improving their well being. Not limited to economic development, it expands further to include the social, political and ethical dimensions.

The United Nations Development Programme defines human development as "the process of enlarging people's choices", said choices allowing them to "lead a long and healthy life, to be educated, to enjoy a decent standard of living", as well as "political freedom, other guaranteed human rights and various ingredients of self-respect"

Nepal's 16th 5 year plan has hoped to reduce the poverty line below 20.3 percent and consumer inflation to 5 percent by the fiscal year 2085/86 BS. It hopes to elevate the human development index from  0.601 to 0.650,  Human Wealth Index from 76.3 to 78, and lower the Economic and Environmental Risk Index from 29.7 to 24. The average life expectancy is targeted to rise from 71.3 years to 73 years within five years.

Economic Survey (2022/23) of Nepal shows the glumly scenario of the current conditions:

* Among the province-wise population distribution, multidimensional poverty is highest in Karnali at 39.5 percent and lowest in Bagmati at 7.0 percent. This shows the different rates of development and living conditions within the country.

* Human Development Index of Nepal as per Human Development Report, 2021 has reached to 0.602. According to the report, Nepal ranks 143rd in the world ranking of human development.. According to the Nepal Human Development Report, 2020 published by the National Planning Commission, the Human Development Index of Bagmati Province and Gandaki Province is above the national average of 0.602. This again proves the varied rate of human developments in Nepal.
